The Austrian motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette) is a mandatory toll permit — in physical sticker or digital form — required for all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes using Austrian motorways and expressways managed by ASFINAG. The obligation applies regardless of the vehicle's country of registration.
The vignette system replaced per-kilometre tolling on the general motorway network with a flat-rate annual fee, supplemented by short-term options. Certain alpine routes still carry separate tolls in addition to the vignette. Motorists without a valid vignette face substantial on-the-spot fines.
Since 2022, the digital e-vignette — registered against the vehicle's licence plate — has become the primary purchase format. Both physical and digital vignettes carry identical legal standing and are enforced through roadside checks and automated licence-plate recognition cameras.
"The vignette obligation applies to all motorways and expressways bearing the green motorway sign in Austria. Using these roads without a valid vignette is an administrative offence under the BStMG."
